Celebrating Ruth Asawa

" Sometimes good comes through adversity. I would not be who I am today had it not been for the internment, and I like who I am. "

Asawa found her niche in wire sculpture. Inspired by basket weavers in Mexico, she created abstract, three-  dimensional structures. Nature was an endless source of her inspiration: "plants, the spiral shell of a snail, seeing light through insect wings, watching spiders repair their webs in the early morning, and seeing the sun through the droplets of water suspended from the tips of pine needles while watering my garden."

The artist overcame difficulties imposed upon her as a Japanese American and an innovator dismissed for creating "feminine handiwork," to leave a lasting impact on the art world.

Untitled (S.383, Wall-Mounted Tied Wire, Open-Center, Six-Pointed Star, with Six Branches), c. 1967
