Rum Freeman Exhibition II explores the tenderness and intimacy between two women, while analysing love as a place of isolation. With passion and strength, Freeman looks into the connection between lovers, a bond challenged by their own physical and emotional limitations. The exhibition exudes a combination of desire and magic. Freeman’s feminist take made her challenge and question the objectification of models by artists and spectators.

Freeman has approached her latest pieces bravely, diving into the darkest and most intimate of human emotions. The intensity of her feelings can be seen both in the subject she paints, and the way she uses the paint. Freeman works on a base of acrylic paint before layering with the distinguished pastel tones of oil paint. Each layer, each colour, each brush on the canvas brings life and nuances to her characters. Freeman’s paintings show passion, defiance and resilience.

Yves Klein’s experimentation with “living brushes” has been a major inspiration for Freeman. While models were an active part of Klein’s creation they were still a tool in the hand of a creator, stripped not only of their clothes but of their independent creative force. Women's bodies are used and objectified by the Male Gaze, while Freeman’s “blue women” are passionate and independent. Lost in the moment of passion they don’t notice our presence, their actions immune to manipulation rendering the viewer merely a spectator of their independence. It is the ultimate feminist manifesto of feminine freedom, women are not puppets, but masters on their own.

Depending on the light, the angle or the viewer’s mood, Freeman’s paintings display different emotions. Spectators will not see and feel the same things, as the paintings will attract them in different ways. Freeman hopes her art will open up a dialogue  and help others share their struggle to be better and stronger.
